About us

SubBase Speedy Subfloor System products have been developed to speed up construction of decks, house subfloors, fences, and any job involving setting timber piles in concrete footings.

They are easily attached to the bottom of the timber piles/posts with a couple of nails or screws, before the piles/posts are placed in their footing holes. Once maneuvered into their correct position they can be braced and the concrete added. Provided concrete with the correct slump is used other components such as bearers can be added after four hours.

Using SubBase products saves time and money; the SubBase100 will allow the use of 90mm2 timber piles for decks, and generally the use of these products will promote more efficient building, cutting wastage.

Builders can even cut the piles to length before the concrete is poured, so that the days of builders cutting vertical piles to correct height are over. Cutting the piles while they are on saw stools is much safer and quicker than using a circular saw on vertical piles, especially when in some cases the piles need to be cut 200mm above ground level.

It is possible to cut to measure and fix the bearers to the piles and prop each bearer line in place before adding concrete to the footing holes.

Director

Paul Hayman is the Company Director, designer and creator of SubBase Speedy Subfloor System having over 35 years of experience throughout the construction industry in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

As an experienced project manager, Paul could see a way for builders to save time by developing a lightweight product that would enable one builder to rapidly set up timber piles and posts in their footing holes prior to concrete being added. The New Zealand building code requires timber house piles to have 100mm of concrete beneath them. To comply builders come up with various methods to suspend timber piles 100mm above the bottom of the footing hole prior to adding concrete. These methods invariably take time and often involve a second builder - Paul designed SubBase as an alternative solution for builders to save time and to be able to work alone. There is also a safety factor involved. It takes two cuts with a circular saw to cut piles to the correct length, and cutting vertical piles with a circular saw often means the saw is extremely close to the builders face, with plenty of noise, and sawdust flying everywhere. The potential for personal harm is great, especially when the piles need to be cut close to the ground.

Initially SubBase125 for 125mm² house piles were created followed by SubBase100 for 100mm² and 90mm² posts.

Traditionally, creating a timber subfloor has been a rather labour-intensive task that has also involved the high-risk activity of horizontally cutting wooden piles to the correct length after they had been fixed in position. The good news is that now with SubBase’s innovative Speedy Subfloor System that utilises plastic pile supports you can save time and money and significantly reduce the risk of accidents. SubBase now allows you to cut deck & house piles to size prior to fixing and positioning – and apart from material savings you also have the further benefit that can fix them into position before concrete is added.

SubBase currently supply two different sizes of supports: the SubBase 125, and the slightly smaller SubBase 100. As you might expect the 125 is designed for use with 125 x 125mm H5 piles and posts and is compliant with regulations pertaining to the construction of residential buildings, while the 100 version is for use with piles of either 100 x 100mm or 90 x 90mm which are appropriate for residential deck constructions.

Both products are lightweight yet strong, are a high visibility yellow colour and are stackable adding to the ease in which they can be used. In an industry where true innovations don’t come along too often, SubBase have become a genuine game changer.

Moving away from the traditional, arduous process and taking advantage of the SubBase Speedy Subfloor System will accelerate your construction process and thereby save you money – and once you have tried SubBase you won’t ever look back. Contact us today to place your order.
